The PowerMatcher Technology was developed by ECN in cooperation with industry and research partners. VITO is associated development partner since the start of 2009.

The PowerMatcher Technology was developed by the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN). This technology is the result of the R&D of ECN’s Intelligent Energy Grids Program. Approximately 15 specialists have accumulated the knowledge required for the transition to reliable, sustainable and cost-effective energy grids. ECN possesses a broad interdisciplinary expertise, including ICT knowledge and economic modeling, in combination with theoretical and practical knowledge on energy regulation techniques and energy markets.
At ECN, energy research is concentrated on themes which contribute to a globally sustainable use of energy. This includes the development of technologies for the increased use of renewable energy, energy storage, and energy conversion. With a staff of over 650 people and an annual budget of 70 million, ECN has developed a portfolio of proprietary technologies and patents - of which some are being commercialized through spin-out companies or licensing structures.

VITO (Flemish institute for technological research) is associated development partner of the PowerMatcher Technology. The research carried out by VITO focuses on intelligent energy systems for Smart Grids. This includes all systems for supply and demand which are made suitable for a Smart Grid. VITO has expertise of these individual technologies, and, moreover, is able to combine these components in their own state of the art Smart Grid testing facilities. In this way expertise is being gathered, which is unique in Flanders and cutting edge in Europe, and is necessary for the technical challenges of the future.
In Flanders, VITO took initiative, together with the Catholic University of Leuven, to bring together all stakeholders to launch a consultation on 'smart grids'. There are concrete plans for a massive demonstration of thousands of connections in cooperation with the Flemish network operators. As a pioneer of the smart grid research in Belgium, VITO provides an important contribution to the successful introduction of the energy networks of the future.
